Healy Awards – How to Apply Half Helmet Football Helmet Decals

Did you recently order Half Helmet Football Decals from Healy Awards?  If so, these easy to read instructions will help when applying your team’s decals to your football helmets.

Step 1: Before peeling the decal off its back liner, cut around the outside of the entire decal (1/4″ around outside printed areas of shape – leaving a clear vinyl border of 1/4″ around the outside).

Step 2: Remove the excess clear vinyl from the inside and outside areas as you apply the decal.

Step 3: Remove a small portion of the back decal liner.

Step 4: Press down a small portion (non-printed area) of the decal to the helmet for position prior to applying.

Step 5: Apply decal from top to bottom removing the liner backing while pressing decal sections into place.  Apply sections a little at a time.

Step 6: Press down the printed decal sections to helmet several times.

Step 7: Cut out any overlapping vent areas or snaps with a razor blade.

Step 8: Repeat steps for opposite side of helmet.

Step 9: You have successfully applied your half helmet decals!

  1. Utilize your helmet color in your decal design.  We recommend keeping areas of your decal design clear in order to save money by having one less print color.  This will allow your 2 color design to become a 1 color design.  Additionally, this ensures that the color of your helmet is exactly the same as the color in your decals.
  2. Simplify your logo to 1 or 2 print colors.  The best way to save money on decals is to simplify your logo utilizing only 1 or 2 print colors.  Let our art department take your logo and make it into a stunning, affordable design today.
  3. Keep your decal size under 36 square inches.  Our durable 20 mil vinyl custom helmet decals include any designs that are 36 square inches or smaller.  Customers often want to create an oversized design to wrap their helmets, but at the same time save money.  While we offer the lowest prices in the industry, decals that are over 36 square inches are significantly more expensive and more difficult to apply to helmets.
  4. Purchase greater quantities.  The easiest way to save money on your decals is to purchase greater quantities of your team or organization’s decal.  Take advantage of price breaks at 50 pairs, 75 pairs, 100 pairs, 150 pairs and 250+ pairs.  Anticipate next year’s needs or buy extra decals to sell as fundraising decals.
  5. Order early to save on shipping.  Don’t wait until the last minute to order your football helmet decals.  By ordering early, we can create your decals in our standard production time of 2-3 business days and ship them to you UPS Ground.  Too many customers wait until the last minute to order decals for their game two days later, and as a result, are forced to ship their decals UPS 2nd Day Air or UPS Next Day Air.  This can prove to be costly.  While we try to make all arrangements to shuffle our production schedule around to get your decals out as fast as we can, sometimes the problem is with how fast UPS can deliver them to your door step requiring you to use an expedited shipping method.

Tips for Reviewing Healy Decal Artwork Proofs

Customers always ask for print samples of their custom decals when in fact the standard artwork proof that is given as part of the order process is just as effective.  Read the below tips for reviewing your artwork proofs effectively for your custom Healy Decals.

  1. Review the decal design.  Review the decal design generated by the Art Department to ensure that the decal design is exactly how you envisioned it. If you have any changes, no problem.  Email your Customer Service Rep and our Art Department will make your requested changes and email you back a revised artwork proof.
  2. Review the printed colors.  The printed colors will be displayed at the bottom of the artwork proof. The colors shown will be those that will be printed and your helmet color that will be shown as “Clear”. The “Clear” color will not be printed, as we will use your helmet color in the decal to save you money and get an exact match of your helmet color. Please note that slight variations in color between proofs and final product may occur. To request samples of available print colors, call our Customer Service Team at 800-558-1696.
  3. Review decal sizing.  The Art Department will size your decals to what they feel will be the best possible size for your helmets. However, since we do not have your helmets in front of us, we ask that you review the sizing that is shown in the proof. Additionally, we recommend that you print out the artwork itself to get an idea of the actual sizing. When doing so, please be sure that your print settings are set to print Actual Size. After you print out the artwork to actual size, we recommend cutting out the artwork and placing it on your helmets. The sizing, when printed correctly, will be the exact size that our production team will print your decals. If you have any changes to the size, no problem. Simply let your Customer Service Rep know and our Art Department will make the requested changes and email you back a revised artwork proof.

How to use ProPrep™

  5. Wipe off haze and buff to a shine
  6. The helmet is ready to place the decals

How to Apply Multi-Color Football Helmet Stripes

Before any decals can be applied, the surface area of the football helmet must be clean from dirt or dust. You can towel off the surface with water only and let dry.

  1. Remove front face mask screws so Healy multi-tape can be placed underneath the sweat-band flap. 
  2. Remove only 1/2 of multi-tape backing and start application on front edge of helmet underneath sweat band flap. 
  3. Align multi-tape to middle seam of helmet and press tape down to front edge, then press center of tape down first, then apply the edges.
  4. When applying multi-tape, work in small sections, pressing tape down, from the middle working outwards, gradually working to the back of the helmet.
  5. When multi-tape is completely applied, there may be excess vinyl. Trim excess vinyl from back of helmet so the tape edge is flush with back edge of helmet. 
  6. If Healy multi-tape is off-center, gently lift and reapply, following the middle seam of helmet. Repeat above application steps. Finally, press entire stripe, with thumb, once again, to insure it is firmly into place. 
  7. Reposition sweat-band flap and tighten face mask screws.
  8. And your finished applying Healy multi-color football helmet stripes.

How to Apply Football Helmet Decals

Before any decals can be applied, the surface area of the football helmet must be clean from dirt or dust. You can towel off the surface with water only and let dry.

  1. Decal should be positioned on helmet so the bottom of the decal design rests 2” from top of helmet ear hole.
  2. Press center of decal to helmet so only a small middle section is applied to helmet.
  3. Working from middle, out, press decal to helmet. Apply larger areas to helmet first then press smaller sections down. This will prevent buckling.
  4. When decal is applied to helmet, rub over entire decal with thumb to make sure it is completely pressed into place.
  5. If buckling occurs, gently lift up buckled area. Pull to straighten and reapply.
